Arzu-The Living Legend.

ARTIST BIO
Arzu is a contemporary painter whose work engages themes of emotional resilience, identity, and transformation, with a sustained focus on the interior lives of women. Working at the boundary of abstraction and figuration, her paintings explore psychological states rather than fixed narratives, using layered surfaces and fragmented forms to suggest vulnerability, endurance, and renewal.
Although her professional path initially developed outside the art world, her commitment to painting remained constant. Alongside her formal education, she pursued art training and maintained an ongoing studio practice, working privately for many years before exhibiting publicly. This extended period of parallel practice shaped her emphasis on emotional depth, experimentation, and process-driven inquiry.
Since the pandemic, she has exhibited extensively in Southern California, including multiple exhibitions and solo shows at the Claremont Artwalk and Pomona Artwalk. She has shown repeatedly at Ahmad Shariff Art Gallery in Claremont and has exhibited in galleries in Istanbul, reflecting an international dimension to her work.
Her work has been included in exhibitions such as Fullerton: Art Town at the Fullerton Museum, juried digital exhibitions at the Sasse Museum of Art, and the Art@ONT program at Ontario International Airport in collaboration with the Chaffey Community Museum of Art. Her paintings have received first place awards in local exhibitions and honorable mentions in juried open calls featured on Artrepreneur.
In April 2023, she curated You Are Not Alone!, a fundraising exhibition at Ginger Elliott Gallery in Claremont supporting survivors of the Türkiye and Syria earthquakes. Most recently, her work The Way Forward was exhibited at TAG Gallery’s L.A. Open 2026.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores the multiple versions of womanhood that coexist within me. I understand identity not as a stable condition, but as a continuous process of becoming shaped by experience, rupture, resilience, and renewal. I am not interested in arriving at a finished or ideal self. What matters to me is movement itself, the sustained act of continuing, questioning, and reshaping who I am in response to what life presents.
My paintings exist in the shifting space between abstraction and figuration. Faces and bodies appear, fragment, dissolve, and re-form through layered marks, textured surfaces, and unstable color fields. These forms are not portraits or representations. They function as psychological traces, registering emotional memory, internal tension, and moments of presence. I work intuitively, allowing emotion, hesitation, and impulse to guide the process rather than pursuing visual resolution or narrative clarity.
Experimentation is central to my practice. I am open to uncertainty and to making mistakes, which I understand as necessary sites of learning rather than failures to be corrected. Through changes in materials, drawing languages, and surface treatment, I allow the work to resist control and expectation. This openness mirrors my belief that life itself is an ongoing act of self-creation, one that expands through pressure, disruption, and challenge rather than comfort.
By embracing vulnerability, contradiction, and instability, I challenge the idea of the “perfect woman” as polished, coherent, or complete. Each painting becomes a record of persistence, an accumulation of gestures that acknowledge complexity without resolving it. My work honors growth not as arrival, but as the courage to remain in process.
